The Ultimate Guide To One Page SEO

More and more website owners opt for one-page websites. They are simple, provide great user experience, and can be very beautiful, but the only thing they believe is missing is the ability to rank well.

Thinking that, would actually mean that you think Google is not up to the task, and trust us, they are. It has also been officially said by Matt Cutts, head of Google’s webspam team in this video

So what do I do to get my one page website optimized?

Every website needs to be optimized on-site and off-site, and we have created a list of suggestions you should follow if you want to get the best out of your site.

On-site SEO for one page websites

When you have a one-page website, you have to make the best out of it. Your copy needs to be well written, to target the right audience, corresponed well to each section of the website and make your website both informative and pretty.

The first step is well executed on-page basic SEO : title, headings, alt tags etc.

-Make sure your title tag counts. Write it well.
-Make sure every section has an appropriate H1 heading and other headings as well. In this case multiple H1s are allowed.
-Every image needs to have a descriptive alt text and a title.
-Place each section of content inside its own div. DIV is an seo signal. (If you have a doubt on how to do this, here’s a rough sample of the code):

…content…

…content…

…content…

Remember: Div is an seo signal, css id isn’t

Google has gotten a lot better at handling JavaScript, but you will still need to test your website. Make sure you haven’t blocked anything with robots.txt, especially JavaScript, if you’re not pinning a section, if you don’t have any strange or unusual JavaScript interaction, or having things fold in or fold out etc.

Off-site SEO for One Page Websites

Off-site SEO can be tricky as it is hard to get “natural” links to your website, and the interlinking is difficult, but there is a way to encompass all of this.

For internal linking, in order to separate the website and create a multiple page experience, it is best to link to the content sections (the anchor links) this way:

Step 1: Name the DIV id, e.g.

Step 2: Link to it Art + Design

Step 3: If you are linking to the section from another page, (your Pinterst profile e.g.), the link should be: Art + Design

On the plus side, all links will pass link equity to your homepage, the page will gain authority quickly and if all other factors are in place, it will start ranking well pretty soon.

Content:

You have to be careful when it comes to content for your website. Not only does it have to be shorter, well written and to the point, it would also be good if you did some keyword research beforehand, because you should strive to match the content to the query. Use Google Adwords’ keyword planner to check the number of visits and decide which keywords are best to target.

One Page Design and SEO

Parallax

A complete website in parallax design, can be a challenge for SEO, but a combo approach of HTML5 with some parallax elements, which we incorporate in our themes from time to time, will not hurt your website, and will make it look more attractive to the end user.

HTML5

HTML5 is considered very seo-friendly, but there are developers who tend to add excessive JavaScript which makes it difficult for search engine bots to understand the content. The best solution for this is to show static content that represents your HTML5 content.

Responsive

Having a responsive website is a better solution for mobile (or any device) than having a mobile version of the website, and that is why all our websites are responsive. With a responsive website link equity is strong and all the parameters are unchanged.

Although one-page websites may be a challenge for seo, it is clear that these types of websites are excellent for conversions, are easy to set up and navigate, and if it works for you and your users, it will work for Google as well.
